Happy New Year and welcome back! We trust everyone had a relaxing break filled with lots of food, fun and family.
In math this week we revisited data collection and honed our graphing skills. Our POW centered around the concept of interpreting the information presented in a graph. What message is it conveying and what story does it tell?
In science, we began our week watching "The Lego Movie". As the students enjoyed the movie they were asked to identify as many simple machines as possible using tally marks in their science journal. We were amazed at how many simple machines were identified. We reviewed our Simple Machines check in that the students did before the break and we are well on our way in understanding what simple machines are and how they work together to form a complex machine. We will be continuing this unit over the next month and a half.
Tomatos!!!! We were very excited to visit our tomato plants and make detailed observations of their growth. Please see the pictures below to see what occurred over the break with our ongoing study.

During Humanities this week, fourth graders have been very active in the preparation and development of interview questions. Each grade four student has been asked to complete an interview by Tuesday, January 13th to help further their inquiry into the question,
"How does the natural environment of where you live, affect how you live?"
These interviews can be conducted in any medium and information can be collected with student iPads, email, paper and pencil, as well as audio or movie recording. Students were asked to bring home a sheet with their choice of interview guest and brainstorm of questions on Wednesday of this week for parents to initial. An email asking for parents to help facilitate these interviews was also sent home the same day.
There is a list of interview questions posted on Edmodo for students to reference as well.
In addition to working on this inquiry, grade 4's were introduced to 2 student teachers form Mount Royal University, who will be completing their final practicums in Mrs. Kelly and Mrs. Fawcett's classes. Megan Perry (4.3/4.4) and Brittney Glinsbockel (4.1/4.2) have completed letters of introduction that are attached below.
We are excited to have an extra set of hands and fresh eyes in the classroom with us until April of this year!
