The grade 4 students were treated to a informative Eco-Wind presentation by Chad Macy, an Environmental Biologist, with TransAlta on Wednesday. The presentation was well received by our students who asked many thoughtful questions from our expert. We are excited to visit the Summerview Wind Farms on our Southern Alberta History Tour!
In math this week we reviewed our multiplication and division assessment to ensure we are all using effective and efficient strategies on solving word problems. We also began our investigation into fractions with the question, "What is a Whole?". The students will be focusing their mathematical thinking around the concepts of the "Whole", "parts of the whole" and how to represent it, in the next few weeks.
In Science, the grade 4 students finished up the mechanical engineering aspect of their bike modification projects. No matter what stage the students achieved in their modification, the wealth of knowledge and scientific thinking has been evident in the conversations, collaborations and reflections. All this collected information will now be transferred into an iMovie presentation in which they will show the process through photos and verbalize the hypothesis, observations and conclusion of the exploration. Next time you need a tire patched, a chain fixed or a bearing greased.... just ask a grade 4 student!
Above is a modified bike. The cassette, from the drivetrain, has been removed and replaced with the Megadrive to allow for easier hill climbing.

This week in humanities the grade fours were put into three novel study groups reading Terror at Turtle Mountain, Shadow of Disaster, and The Mountain that Walked. Each of these three books are themed around Frank’s Slide and will prepare the grade four’s for the S.A.H.T in June. As we continue to read, students are working in a rotation where they read, respond, and discuss. This novel study opens up opportunities for student choice where the grade fours can work individually or in groups. The grade fours have access to each of the three books in our library and can sign them out during library hours.
On Thursday we welcomed a new member to 4.2 classroom named Tortuga. She is an Eastern Box Turtle and will be living in our classroom until the end of the school year. When the grade fours in 4.1 & 4.2 were introduced to Tortuga they learned about her species, history, and how to care for her. Thank you to the Henderson family for allowing us to house her until the end of the year!
