On Monday and Tuesday of this week, fourth graders got to visit Southland Leisure Centre for a full day of swimming. This is an annual trip made possible by our Phys Ed department at Connect. Students were well behaved and seemed to enjoy their time spent in the pool.
Grade fours (4.2 & 4.4) have been working on scratch art this week using oil pastels, tempera paint, and tooth picks. Students were asked to create a rough draft of an artifact or symbol representing First Nations people and then scratch this image onto the paint covered paper. We explored line and pattern and how it can be used to enhance blank space in an artwork. The grade fours took great pride in completing their art work and look forward sharing these with you next week at the Student Led Conferences.

In our First Nations inquiry and preparation for our trip to the Weaselhead, the grade fours continued exploring how people are connected to the land by providing personal examples. We determined that if our goal is to better understand someone else’s relationship to the land, that we must first understand our own. The grade fours summarized how these connections can be made in an emotional, physical, or spiritual way. At the Weaselhead, students were asked to find a special spot to pause and reflect on their experience using the 5 senses. Thank you to all the parents and staff who volunteered to help make this trip happen!
We look forward to hosting a guest speaking next Tuesday, Mr. Dion Simon from the Mount Royal Iniskim Center who will share a First Nations perspective about connections to the land.
In addition to our continued work surrounding First Nations culture, students will be revisiting their knowledge of persuasive strategies and target audiences for an activity at Student Led Conferences Next week.
*Student Led Conferences are March 12th from 4pm- 8pm and March 13th from 8am-1pm (no classes)
These conferences are informal and do not require a sign up. These are an opportunity for your child to share evidence of their learning from Term 2 with you at the school. If you are unable to make it to the school at one of these times, please have your child bring their activities home.
