Fourth graders spent this beautiful week busy with identity artifacts and making connections. While 4.3 and 4.4 were off at Camp Sweet, our 4.1 and 4.2 pods finished up their first drafts of making connections to their artifacts that they brought from home. Students brought in some very lovely and thoughtful pieces and had the opportunity to breifly share their chosen artifact and the strongest connection that they had made with their fellow classmates. Students also spent time reviewing the writing process and engaging in creative writing work.
In addition, the 4.1/4.2 pod has begun actively using 3 (of the 7) Reading Comprehension Strategies. To date, we have covered and reviewed Visualizing, Making Connections and Questioning. Reading comprehension strategies will continue to be introduced throughout the following weeks.
We are hopeful that Apple ID's for the pod will be done by weeks end, to ensure that we can begin to use our iPads much more for our upcoming Humanities work. An email detailing the process of setting up Apple ID's was sent to parents last week, as well as emailed again on Tuesday. You may also find this under our "Links and Important Documents" tab.

Mathematics/Science
Wondering fuels exploration. This was evident in the work of the students both in the classroom and the field this week. Even though 4.3 and 4.4 were at Camp Sweet, parallels can be drawn between the students noticing patterns in nature and the students in the classroom decoding the structure of number pyramids. At Camp Sweet students used their senses to explore forested areas while students in the classroom used reason and challenged assumptions while exploring number patterns. Both explorations were uniquely different but shared some common traits.
This week, before students left for camp, we brainstormed our next steps of exploration regarding urban gardening. We are now beginning to understand what the knowledge and skills of an urban gardener entail. It was our initial wondering that was the catalyst for this continuing exploration.

The grade 4's will continuing their Longboard unit in Phys. Ed in the upcoming couple of weeks. Please remember to bring bike helmets!
Terry Fox Run 2015
Our annual Terry Fox Run will take place on Thursday, September 25th. Fourth graders will be running 5 kilometres through North Glenmore Park during the morning to benefit the Terry Fox Foundation and Cancer research. Please ensure that your child is dressed appropriately and has a change of clothes and water bottle if needed.
