Finally!!!! 4.1/ 4.2 went off to camp. We are very glad they had the opportunity to experience Camp Sweet even though the weather could have been a tad warmer.
In Math, the grade 4’s were presented with the “Number Pyramids” problem. Before they began to solve the pyramid we looked at all 3 pyramids and answered the following questions; “What do I know?”, “What patterns are present?”, “Do I see relationships with the numbers presented?”, Do I have enough information to solve the problem?”
Students wondered about how the numbers relate and can interact. There is an alchemy that is associated with number. Exploration of number pyramids help students wonder about patterns and seek out relationships, rules and explanations.
Students applied addition to solve the pyramid problems. They were to find the underlying principle or rule of the pyramid that it is built upon. What is the "key" to finding a solution to the blank squares in the pyramid problems.
Students also wondered and explored what happens when they start to select the numbers to put in the bottom layer of the pyramid.
In Science, we began to think about research and what interests we have in the plant unit of study. As a class we took a big concept, made a web of all the information we already know (previous knowledge), narrowed down an idea we would like to know more about (What am I interested in?) and began the process of creating good questions. The concept of researching will be continuous throughout the year. We will work through exploring concepts, formulating good questioning, where we find the information we require, (whether that be in the form of websites, books, journals, magazines or experts) and how to represent our findings. We will explore what makes credible websites and supply them with the tools they need to be successful in finding the information they require.

In Humanities this week, we focused on what to do when you come upon an unfamiliar word when reading. We discussed using context clues, such as reading the sentences before and after the word, looking at the prefixes and suffixes, substituting words we think it might be, etc. We will continue to practice these strategies during independent reading times. At this time, most students are finished editing and revising their Identity Artifact write up and are beginning to publish using Keynote. This will be our first Humanities assignment posted on Edmodo. Early next week, we will walk the students through how to upload their projects onto the assignment post. During learning strategies, grade 4's had some time to explore Edmodo and are beginning to feel more comfortable with it's different applications. We have a new mantra when working with our iPads: Be patient and don't panic! We discussed how it takes time to learn how to use a new device and that there will be times when they feel some frustration but over time they will become more familiar with the different functions and will begin to feel more confident:)
