Our snowy week began with a visit from the "Leaf Ninja's". These Ninja's opened our eyes to Urban Gardening and what is occurring in and around our city to promote permaculture. Through the eyes of a scientist we learned how urban gardeners share the concepts of Plant Growth and Change as well as Waste in Our World. This presentation inspired wonderings and exploration of what we can do ourselves to work with, rather than against nature.
P.O.W. (drum roll please).... "Karate Frog!!!!"
A focus of the problem this week was "what do we need to find out?" and "how do we proceed to solve the question being asked?". Once that was established the students worked independently to get the Karate Frog to the doctor's lilypad.
Below is a visual of the gro wth mindset by Dr. Carol Dweck. It is being discussed with the students within math class, during learning strategies and before the return of formative feedback. It dovetails nicely with the work Connect Charter is doing regarding inquiry, process and our exemplary learning and teaching frameworks. Living in the growth mindset helps students understand the challenges and obstacles along the path of learning support understanding of the concepts presented.

Fourth graders spent their week in Humanities exploring artifacts and their relation to identity. We were lucky to have an expert from the Glenbow Museum come in on both Monday and Tuesday and work with students to identify 5 different artifacts. In the coming weeks we will continue our inquiry into Identity and explore how artifacts can represent us and who we are. Students are asked to bring in a well thought out artifact for Monday morning.

Camp Sweet
4.3 and 4.4 will be departing for our Camp Sweet adventure on the morning of Tuesday, Sept. 16th. Please take a few moments to read through the Camp Sweet Booklet to ensure that your child is fully prepared.
A few reminders:
-If your child requires any medicine while on the trip, it will need to be given to the teachers the morning before we leave in a bag with clear instructions.
-Your child will require a bagged lunch on the first day.
-Please send in a nut free snack (enough to share with 10 people)
-If your child requires night time "training underwear", we use the same process as in distributing medicine. Please put the "training underwear" in an opaque bag, labelled with his/her name and give the bag to the teacher before leaving. We allow these students to change in the cabin to ensure their privacy.
-No cell phones or electronics games are to be brought to camp.
-Your child will need a labelled water bottle.
-We have asked our students to participate in the packing of their bags and to practice rolling up their sleeping bags and foamies.
It looks like the weather will be beautiful for our trip!
PE REMINDER:
Students will need a helmet the next 3 weeks for the long boarding unit.
Have a wonderful weekend!
