This was a week of good byes to parts of our grade 4 team.
It began on Wednesday with the departure of Mrs. Kelly as she started her maternity leave. We celebrated grade 4 style with snacks and a dance. It was a lot of fun seeing all 100 kids in a classroom! We thoroughly enjoyed watching the video Mr. Fawcett created over the past few weeks. He had the students reflecting on their time with Mrs. Kelly and the responses were "awesome, amazing, kind, fun, great dancer."... etc. Mrs. Kelly will be missed by us all and we wish her well. Thank you to all the families who contributed to "Operation Mongoose".
We welcome Ms. Glinsbockel to the team as she takes over the role of primary teacher in the 4.2 classroom.
Friday was the last day for our student teachers. Mr. Makasiar and Ms. Perry have made such an impact to our classes and the school. Their contribution to our learning community will always be remembered and we wish them well as they transition to the next chapter in their teaching careers. Good luck to you both!
This week in Humanities students focused on completing their mind maps of their First Nations key learnings. They also worked through planning the various elements of their persuasive videos focused on protecting one of Alberta’s National or Provincial parks. Groups met with the teacher to discuss their ideas and receive feedback on their planning.
Next week they will begin assembling their videos using iMovie.
This week in Math the grade fours applied their inventive strategies by transferring them over from multiplication to division. They were able to come to the realization that performing the opposite procedure will lead them to the quotient. Also, the students focused on completing the POW which was filled with 1-digit by 2-digit and 2-digit by 2-digit problems. The grade fours showed resiliency in constantly checking over their solutions to try to arrive at the final sum.
In Science, the students are slowly starting to figure out the amount of patience, commitment, and dedication it takes to fine tune the simple machines found within a complex machine. At this moment, the grade fours are striving to have their bicycles ready for the initial testing.
Their knowledge, experience, and language revolving the engineering behind mechanical devices continue to grow exponentially. Next week, we look forward to having the students begin their modifications which are precisely identified in the “ultimate proposal”.
