This week in mathematics the students were called to create a rough sketch of five different strategies they have come to understand over the last couple weeks. While keeping in mind spacing, neatness, and mathematical language the grade fours completed the strategy cards using them during various grouping activities. When introducing computation strategies, we wanted the students to think about numbers, not digits. They need to always begin with the large or left-hand numbers. The grade fours were asked to find invented ways to solve the question “34 x 6”. In the next couple classes, we will spend some time interpreting the complete-number, partitioning, and compensation strategies.
The grade 4's revisited the process of thinking like a scientist to prepare for an upcoming project which will begin next week. The discussions included "What if?", Cause and affect, variables, and challenging our own ideas and questions. We also had our second visit from Two Wheel View on Thursday. The students explored the concepts of rollers, ball bearings and friction while taking apart the bearing systems, cleaning them, applying grease and rebuilding the bicycle. The students were engaged and eager to learn from our experts. We did have many greasy hands when done but those were accompanied by big smiles.

Fourth graders have been balancing their time spent in Humanities between their First Nations story inquiry and their exploration into Alberta's protected parks. To begin our week, students reviewed their encounters with First Nations stories and discussed what an exemplary response should look like. Students have been responsible for responding to each text that they read with a summary, thoughts on the authors message and connections they have made to the story. They have completed responses individually and in groups. Next week, we will spend time reading and responding to a First Nations story as whole classes and discussing what we have learned about First Nations people and culture from our use of stories thus far.
Grade fours have also been using our "Voices of Alberta" texts to find information about our province's protected parks. Students spent time learning about strategies that help find information and determine importance. The terms that were focused on were "skimming", "scanning" and "reading in detail". Fourth graders brainstormed five questions to answer to give them a better understanding of what protected parks are and what purpose they serve. We will be using this knowledge (alongside our previous understanding of persuasion techniques) in the coming weeks to develop persuasive videos in favour of the continued preservation of some of Alberta's land.
PINK SHIRT DAY
Please remind your child to wear pink on Tuesday, February 24th in support of the nation-wide Anti-bullying campaign.
