Fourth graders were excited to welcome a guest speaker to our classes on Tuesday of this week. Dion Simon, a First Nations representative from the Iniskim centre, visited classes and spoke to grade 4's about First Nations' beginnings, teachings and stories. Our grade 4's were wonderful audience members for Mr. Simon.
In addition to Mr. Simon's visit, grade four classes spent time examining a variety of advertisements and identifying known persuasion techniques, as well as target audience.
Students were first asked to review what they could recall about persuasive techniques. The discussion then turned to answering the question "Why is it important to know your audience?" Students put their knowledge and skills into action during our Student Led Conferences on Thursday and Friday.
In the weeks after spring break, students will begin to pair their knowledge of persuasion and audience with their understanding of natural areas and protected parks.

It was wonderful to see such a large turn out for our student led conferences. It is such an important opportunity for the students to showcase their learning and to have parents participate in the process. If you were unable to make it this time, several of the activities can be completed at home.

Two Wheel View had their last visit this week to help students begin the design process for their bicycle modifications. Students are taking their newly acquired mechanical skills to modify the simple machines on their bicycles for a desired effect. The students will then test their design to prove if their design was effective, or not. Two Wheel View helped students envision their designs and what has to be done to make it a reality. Their expertise was invaluable in learning to change cassettes on rear wheels and how to change crank arms on the chain ring. This will support our "bike designers" as they move forward with their designs. The students can now, patch a tire, change bearings on a wheel, maintain braking systems, and see the importance of gears on the drivetrain.
Student Led conferences
It was wonderful to see such a large turn out for our second student led conference. It is such an important opportunity for the students to demonstrate their understandings and to have parents participate in the process. If you were unable to make it this time, several of the activities can be completed at home.
