The past few days have been filled with establishing routines, handing out supplies, discussing our culture of mutual respect and getting to know one another.
In Humanities classes, we have spent the week exploring our favourite books. Students were asked to bring in their favourite storybook or novel to share with the class. We also toured the library and received a library orientation, where grade 4's were able to check out books for the first time at Connect. We began to discuss genres this week and each class was responsible for developing a definition for their groups chosen genre, be it Adventure, Mystery, Fantasy etc.
In the coming weeks, we will continue to explore who we are as readers and begin our Social Studies focus on Identity.
Examples of Student work (Genre Posters):
We visited the Science Lab to begin our first exploration, "Investigation of an Object". The students were presented with an unknown object and gave insightful feedback as to what they were witnessing through descriptive words, measurement and sketches. The purpose of our exploration was to set the tone for our work in science this year. We are just beginning in our journey to develop and grow our scientific mindset. Leonardo DaVinci said that to know something, you must sketch it first; we are starting to observe and to take note of the world around us. The next step in our explanation was to break apart the object to observe what can be seen on the inside. We will continue this investigation next week where the nature of the unknown will be revealed. Stay Tuned!!!
